>>>beauty banter: ICE ICE BABY, BEST BEAUTY BENEFITS OF WINTER - PART ONE

With storms in the North and Jack busy frosting in the South, winter is making her presence known in all her wet, windy and (sometimes) wonderful glory. While it’s great to appreciate the glory of any season, winter can easily take you in her cool and icy grip leave you feeling a little moody and blue. If you’re feeling the chill then read on for some inspiration on how to make winter beautifully beneficial for your beauty routine - hopefully it will have you thinking less about sleet and sludge and more about the pearly and pleasant side of the cool months to come.

More make-up
Much like how you layer up in your favorite merino- jumper- coat combo winter is the perfect time to indulge in some extra layers of maquillage. I don’t mean stifling your skin in a foundation that feels heavier than a woolen coat – it’s more about taking the opportunity to create a sophisticated and polished look with your all of your favorite products. Forget the slap and dash of summer and keep warm by the heater as you lavish in applying gorgeously textured foundation and lovingly apply powders and blushes. You can’t go past Maybelline’s Dream Matte Mousse foundation for sublime softness – and check out Teint Visionnaire by Lancome if you want a gorgeous creamy finish with extra skincare benefits.

Moody broody
There is just something about it being darker and dimmer that makes it that much more acceptable to dare to wear something deep and tenebrous on the lips and eyes. Make like a femme fetale in a 40s film noir and darken lips with crimson, plum and chocolate shades.  Just make sure you wear a matching lip liner to keep the look sharp not sloppy. As for eyes, this is the best time to get seriously smoky and mysterious by using a soft black eye kohl scribbled close to the lash line and blending it with your ring finger or a blending brush (you can’t go past a MAC #217) and then adding a dark powder eye shadow on top to create more dimension and sootiness.

Hydration sensation
Despite the all of the extra moisture around (thanks rain!) winter can sap your skin dry, depleting it of essential hydration. Show your skin some extra love and drench skin in delicious creams, masks and serums that it will positively drink up. Make sure you change your lotion to a rich cream (I really like Skinfood Nourishing Moisturiser) if your are particularly prone to dryness. If you still find yourself a bit oily in winter, let your skin benefit from the extra nourishment of a cream at night time only. Add a serum if you are serious about hydration, one of my absolute favorites is HydraQuench Intensive Bi-Phase Serum by Clarins for its hydration boost, gorgeous scent, silky feel and generous glow giving goodness. If you need to pamper skin that’s a bit temperamental consider a mask. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Mask (I am going to dedicate a whole post to how great this product is one day) floods skin with moisture and leaves it feeling plump and hydrated for days after use.

Sweet sweet sleep
I loathe the loss of the sun in winter but it does mean I feel less guilty about languishing in bed for hours on end. Use winter as an excuse to go to bed early and get your full 8+ hours of blissful Z’s – you’ll look more rested, night time skin care will have more time to work its midnight magic, and your extra energy will be infectious – it’s not called beauty sleep for nothing.

Wrap up warm and keep a watch for part two next week for winter hair care, body love and beauty fun.
